Sandra Dieckmann is an illustrator, author and maker. Her work is deeply inspired by all that's weird and wonderful in nature, drifting, thoughts and dreams. She is best known for her colourful and patterned, often intricate renderings but works in a multitude of media, from analogue to digital and sometimes clay. A lot of her self initiated work is sold online in her Etsy shop, as well as through various worldwide stockists. Sandra's work has been applied to a wide selection of international commissions and projects including licensing, editorial, book illustration and much more. She was born in the north of Germany, and after twenty years living and working in East London, now resides in the beautiful Peak District in the UK.

The best folktales have a dark edge. Conversely, the best folk art pops with colour - perhaps as a visual way of whistling in the dark, perhaps a celebration of the richness of northern Europe's storytelling tradition. Sandra Dieckmann's nature inspired illustration has got that elusive, comfortable yet disquieting quality in spades.

Sandra’s debut picture book as author and illustrator Leaf was published by Flying Eye Books in June 2017. It was nominated for the Kate Greenaway Medal, long-listed for the Klaus Flugge Prize and short-listed for the Waterstones Children's book prize. Followed by her second book The Dog That Ate The World, which got nominated for the Ezra Jack Keats Book Award 2019 and won the Teach Early Years award in the Picture Book category. Her third picture book as author and illustrator Waiting For Wolf was published by Hachette Children’s Books in September 2019 and received a Kate Greenaway nomination. After having her daughter Ronja and focusing for some time on motherhood, she published The Secret Forest with Scholastic in 2021, followed by The Magic Feather with Hachette in September 2022. Sandra is currently working on her next picture book as author and illustrator and an exciting larger fairytale project with Walker Books is publishing 3rd October 2024.
